Three Pillars of Impact
Structured education, compassionate patient support, and locally-grounded research — three interconnected programmes transforming diabetes care across Nigeria.
Pillar One
Structured, community-based education that empowers patients, families, and healthcare workers with evidence-based knowledge about prevention, self-management, and care — adapted for the Nigerian context.
Our flagship education vehicle is the GEMS Programme — a structured course built around four evidence-based pillars: Glucose, Exercise & Eating, Medication, and Self-management.
GEMS Programme: Our flagship structured diabetes education course for people living with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
Facilitator Training (DEFP): Online programme equipping nurses and allied health professionals to deliver diabetes education in their communities.
Public Awareness: Community outreach, social media campaigns, and events raising diabetes literacy across Nigeria.
Multilingual Resources: Education materials available in English, Yorùbá, Hausa, and Igbo.
Pillar Two
Safe spaces, support groups, and one-to-one guidance that help people living with diabetes navigate the physical, emotional, and social challenges of managing a lifelong condition.
Living with diabetes is not just a medical challenge — it affects every part of daily life. Our patient support programmes create genuine community and reduce the isolation that so many people experience.
Support Groups: Regular peer-led sessions providing emotional support, shared learning, and community connection.
Caregiver Support: Resources and sessions specifically for family members supporting loved ones with diabetes.
DiaBot AI Assistant: Free, 24/7 AI health assistant answering questions about diabetes management and self-care.
Patient Referral: Connecting people to appropriate diabetes services, specialists, and resources in their area.
Pillar Three
Generating local evidence on diabetes burden, barriers to care, and intervention effectiveness — contributing to policies and practices that improve outcomes across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Too often, diabetes research in Sub-Saharan Africa is conducted elsewhere and applied without context. We are committed to building a local evidence base that reflects real Nigerian lives.
Burden of Disease: Mapping the prevalence and impact of diabetes across Nigerian communities, particularly in underserved areas.
Barriers to Care: Understanding why people delay diagnosis and discontinue treatment, to design better interventions.
Programme Evaluation: Measuring the real-world effectiveness of GEMS and other DWF education interventions.
Policy Contribution: Sharing findings with health ministries, hospitals, and international diabetes organisations.
